UN agency\u00a0UNESCO has announced the removal of the Kasubi Royal Tombs<\/strong>\u00a0from the list of endangered World Heritage sites. The UN cultural agency says it was satisfied with the reconstruction efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was announced by the World Heritage Committee at the ongoing convention in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Kasubi Tombs<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Kampala<\/a>,\u00a0Uganda<\/a>, is the site of the burial grounds for four\u00a0kabakas<\/a>\u00a0(kings of\u00a0Buganda<\/a>) and other members of the Baganda royal family. As a result, the site remains an important spiritual and political site for the\u00a0 people of Buganda kingdom.<\/a> as well as an important example of traditional architecture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It became a\u00a0UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/a>\u00a0in December 2001,when it was described as “one of the most remarkable buildings using purely vegetal materials in the entire region of sub-Saharan Africa”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the major buildings there were almost completely destroyed by a fire in March 2010, the cause of which is under investigation. As a result, in July 2010 it was included in the list of\u00a0World Heritage Sites in Danger<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
