The UPDF is yet to release details about an attack by Al-Shabab fighters on a military base housing Ugandan forces of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, according to the East African country\u2019s contingent .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rebels attacked the base belonging to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in Bulamarer, 130km (80 miles) southwest of the capital, Mogadishu, on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was an attack this morning at our base \u2026 by elements of al-Shabab but we are waiting for official communication from ATMIS headquarters,\u201d said Uganda People\u2019s Defence Force (UPDF) deputy spokesman Deo Akiiki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ATMIS, which has 22,000 troops, was assessing the security situation, it said on Twitter, without providing details. The mission\u00a0has been assisting Somalia\u2019s federal government in its war against the al-Qaeda-linked armed group since 2022 when it\u00a0replaced<\/a>\u00a0the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
