{"id":7245,"date":"2022-11-11T15:03:32","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T15:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugandaupdatenews.com\/?p=7245"},"modified":"2022-11-11T15:28:43","modified_gmt":"2022-11-11T15:28:43","slug":"electoral-commission-seeks-ugshs-20bn-for-women-council-elections-as-it-faces-legal-challenges-for-passed-deadlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prowebinhost.com\/anzu\/electoral-commission-seeks-ugshs-20bn-for-women-council-elections-as-it-faces-legal-challenges-for-passed-deadlines\/","title":{"rendered":"ELECTORAL COMMISSION SEEKS UG.SHS.20BN FOR WOMEN COUNCIL ELECTIONS AS IT FACES LEGAL CHALLENGES FOR PASSED DEADLINES"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Electoral Commission \u00a0is seeking a supplementary budget of \u00a0Ug.Shs. 20bn to conduct the much delayed women council elections .\u00a0 Because of the political\u00a0 vacuum, the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has since directed\u00a0 t<\/strong>he Deputy Attorney General, Jackson Kafuuzi, to draft \u00a0a statutory instrument tp extend the time of office of the Women Councils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This , after \u00a0Kafuuzi asked \u00a0parliament \u00a0to pass a supplementary budget of Ug.Shs20 billion to enable the EC \u00a0organize the Women Councils and Committees polls which\u00a0 expired on , 23 August 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy\u00a0 AG\u00a0 further\u00a0 requested for the \u00a0release of Ug.Shs15.68 billion provided in the budget, to facilitate the Women Council elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will enable the Electoral Commission to settle outstanding obligations and also fulfill the statutory requirement of organising and conducting elections for new office bearers for Women Councils from village to national level,\u201d Kafuuzi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He \u00a0\u00a0said\u00a0\u00a0 that in the \u00a02022\/2023 financial year, the Electoral Commission presented a funding requirement for the Women Council elections of Shs35.68 billion, of which Ug.Shs15.68 billion was appropriated leaving a\u00a0 balance of \u00a0Ug.Shs20 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Electoral Commission had planned the election activities to commence in June 2022 to avert a vacuum that could arise when the term of the current Women Council office bearers expired in August this year,\u201d Kafuuzi noted. He explained &nbsp;that the Electoral Commission embarked on preparatory activities for the conduct of the elections with hopes that additional resources would be provided by the finance ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn release of details of that approved budget estimates for Financial Year 2022\/2023, the Commission realised that the approved budget levels were not sufficient.
