Dr. Akankwasa Barirega, who beat a host of other candidates to be appointed as the new Executive Director of the\u00a0National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has assumed office- where he will serve for the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Akankwasa\u2019s appointment is a result of a successful recruitment process that commenced in October 2020 led by the out-going Board Chairman, Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri -Togboa. Dr. Akankwasa’s name was forwarded to the line Minister responsible for environment Hon.Sam Cheptoris for formal appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement by NEMA, Akankwasa\u2019s\u00a0appointment takes effect from September 1, 2021 and he replaces Dr.Tom Okurut whose term ended after serving for 10 years since 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Section 22 of the National Environment Act states that the Executive Director shall serve for a period of five years and is eligible for appointment for only one more term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
