President Yoweri Museveni has presided over the much awaited ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Kira-Kasangati- Matugga ring road in Wakiso district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gen. Museveni flanked by the Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, said the construction of the road will spur economic growth in the area and national development in a continued effort by the NRM government to improve people’s incomes and livelihoods. Museveni further noted that the project will serve to address the central objectives of the NRM government which include poverty eradication and economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gen .Katumba said the new road will stretch from Kira town roundabout runs west-wards crossing the Kampala-Gayaza road in Kasangati up to the Kampala-Bombo highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe project involves construction of Kira through Kasangati to Matugga as phase one of the road and we expect in future to have phase two that will take Matugga up to Wakiso. Along the project are five junctions that will be improved with traffic lights,\u201dKatumba said. The minister noted that construction of the 16km road will cost shs200 billion and will be fully funded by the government of Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Road Project will include ,upgrading of the Kira-Kasangati-Matugga road together with the Najjera-Buwate spur and the loop connection of the family access road from gravel to bituminous standard; dualing of the 2km road section from Kyaliwajjala to Kira from the current 2 lanes to 4 lanes with a median and provision of walkways and cycle lanes.

Also, improvements will be carried on \u00a0 junctions which are the Kitetika junction along Kampala-Gayaza road, Mpererwe junction along Kampala-Gayaza road, erisa junction and Gayaza junction along Kampala-Gayaza road; Kyaliwajjala junction, Kira, Kasangati and Matugga junctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project will also entail the design and construction of junction with all side roads along the Kyaliwajjala to Matugga road for a length of at least 20m, signalizing of the junctions at Kwaliwajjala, Kira, Kasangati and Matugga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Project objectives are upgrading of the Kira-Matugga road from gravel(muraam) to bituminous(tarmac) standard will reduce the traffic congestion in and around Kampala and improve the network towards meeting current and forecast traffic demands.
The project will contribute towards improvement of the safety of the non-motorized road users through the provision of the cycle lanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
