Paolo Rossi\u2019s teammates from Italy\u2019s 1982 World Cup-winning squad spoke of their shock at his death on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rossi\u2019s death aged 64 was announced in the early hours of Thursday by the Italian TV channel RAI Sport, for which the former striker and star of that 1982 team had been working as a pundit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what to say, it\u2019s a bolt out of the blue,\u201d said Dino Zoff, Italy\u2019s goalkeeper and captain in 1982. \u201cWe always had a great relationship with Paolo. He was kind, intelligent \u2026 We hadn\u2019t heard from each other for a while and they told us something [was wrong], but I didn\u2019t think it was serious. It\u2019s difficult to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former defender Fulvio Collavati said: \u201cMy comrades from \u201982 are exchanging messages on chat \u2026 a part of us has gone.\u201d Antonio Cabrini added: \u201cSix months ago I lost a brother, and today I lose another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a wave of tributes in Italy<\/a> among those in the sporting and political world. The prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, said Rossi had \u201cgifted a dream to an entire generation\u201d, adding: \u201cGoodbye Paolo Rossi, the unforgettable champion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Juventus and Milan player is widely regarded as one of the best forwards of all time and is most famous for his heroics at the 1982 World Cup in Spain<\/a>. In the final he scored the opening goal as Italy defeated West Germany 3-1. Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian football federation FIGC, said: \u201cThe death of Pablito is another deep pain \u2026 we lose a friend and an icon of football.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RAI Sport presenter Enrico Varriale tweeted<\/a>: \u201cVery sad news: Paolo Rossi left us. Unforgettable Pablito, who made us all fall in love in that summer of \u201982 and who has been a precious and competent workmate at RAI in recent years. RIP dear Paolo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Rossi\u2019s wife, Federica Cappelletti,\u00a0posted a photo<\/a>\u00a0of herself and her husband to her Instagram account along with the words \u201cper sempre\u201d \u2013 \u201cfor ever\u201d. In Italian she later wrote on Facebook: \u201cThere will never be anyone like you, unique, special \u2026\u201d She did not disclose the cause of his death. It is being reported in Italy that he had a long illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rossi won the 1982 World Cup\u2019s Golden Boot and Golden Ball and, in the same year, the Ballon d\u2019Or. In a 2018 Fifa documentary he said: \u201cOn one hand I felt fulfilled. I said to myself: \u2018You\u2019ve made it.\u2019 On the other hand, I was disappointed that all of this just ended. The World Cup was over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also scored three goals at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. With a total of nine goals, he remains Italy\u2019s joint highest scorer at the World Cup with Roberto Baggio and Christian Vieri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That he was involved in the 1982 finals at all was only down to a reduction of a match-fixing ban.
