Ghana has announced that all African passport holders will be granted visa-free access to the country effective\u00a0May 25, 2026, coinciding with Africa Day. Ghana joins a growing list of African countries that have abolished vIsas for the traveling peoples of Africa .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Announced by President John Dramani Mahama, this policy aims to boost tourism, enhance regional trade within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and promote pan-African unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelers will utilize a new, free electronic visa (e-visa) system, removing the need for pre-arrival visa fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative includes robust security measures and does not imply automatic entry for those who are considered security risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this change, Ghana joins several other African nations\u2014including\u00a0Benin<\/a>,\u00a0The Gambia<\/a>,\u00a0Rwanda<\/a>, and\u00a0Seychelles<\/a>\u2014that currently provide visa-free entry to all African citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visa-free regime will form part of a broader reform of Ghana\u2019s immigration system, including the introduction of a new e-visa platform expected to launch next month. Authorities say the system is designed to streamline entry processes while maintaining border controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ablakwa noted that the policy is aimed at reinforcing the country\u2019s position as the cradle of Pan-Africanism<\/a>, while unlocking gains in tourism and intra-African trade through the reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the visa-free regime will form part of a broader e-visa system set to be launched by the Mahama administration next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghana\u2019s government has also been expanding travel access for its own citizens. The Foreign Ministry said 23 visa waiver agreements<\/a> have been negotiated for Ghanaian passport holders since last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The introduction of visa-free entry for all Africans is expected to support increased mobility across the continent, with potential implications for tourism, business travel, and regional integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
