The midnight ceremony inside a landmarked former subway station precedes Mamdani’s public inauguration and a massive, celebratory block party.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zohran Mamdani<\/a> took the oath of office as New York City mayor after midnight on New Year\u2019s Day, after a once-improbable rise to power saw the 34-year-old democratic socialist crush a six-decade state political dynasty<\/a> and charm an effusive President Donald Trump at the White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called taking the office “the honor and a privilege of a lifetime” after signing the paperwork and paying a $9 filing fee \u2212 with exact change \u2212 to make it official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani, surrounded by his family, was administered the oath by New York Attorney General\u00a0Letitia James<\/a>\u00a0under the Spanish-tiled arches of a\u00a0landmarked former subway station below City Hall<\/a>\u00a0in Lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In brief remarks following his oath, Mamdani called the setting “a testament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, health and the legacy of our city.” He also announced Mike Flynn as his Department of Transportation Commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani, a former state assemblyman from Queens, is the city\u2019s 112th mayor<\/a>, and the first Muslim<\/a> and first person of South Asian descent to lead America’s largest city and business and cultural capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zohran Mamdani, was born in\u00a0Kampala, Uganda<\/strong>, to Indian parents (filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani) and moved to the US at a young age but retains his Ugandan citizenship.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took the oath on the Quran, making him the first mayor of New York to do so, according to the New York Times<\/a>. The Times reported Mamdani would use his grandfather\u2019s Quran and one that belonged to Arturo Schomburg, the Black writer and historian for the two ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The underground ceremony<\/a> precedes his public inauguration and a massive block party in the afternoon. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a>, a Brooklyn native and fellow democratic socialist, is set to publicly swear in Mamdani outside of City Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani\u2019s first day will be marked by tens of thousands of Gothamites expected to gather along city streets. His transition team said it would be more public than smaller swearing-in ceremonies<\/a>, which typically were reserved for 4,000 ticketed guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis inauguration is a celebration of the movement we built, the mandate we won, and the city we are prepared to lead,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani takes over from centrist Democrat Eric Adams<\/a>, the scandal-scarred former mayor who left office after one term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years ago, Adams took his oath of office in a high-profile ceremony<\/a> in a crowded Times Square just after the ball dropped to ring in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adams, 65,\u00a0dropped his reelection<\/a>\u00a0bid amid\u00a0corruption investigations<\/a>\u00a0targeting him and half a dozen top aides, and allegations of cozying up to the Trump administration \u2212 seen as a negative in the heavily Democratic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mamdani won the\u00a0recent Nov. 4 general election<\/a>\u00a0with more than a million votes, beating former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and\u00a0Republican Curtis Sliwa<\/a>. His\u00a0campaign upended local and national politics<\/a>\u00a0with an ambitious \u2212 critics say unfeasible \u2212 platform to tackle the cost of living through\u00a0a rent freeze<\/a>\u00a0on a million city apartments, free buses, and\u00a0free child care<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
