FIFA has been warned it will \u201cset a dangerous precedent\u201d if it sanctions domestic league matches being played abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain\u2019s La Liga and Italy\u2019s Serie A are attempting to export regular-season matches abroad this season. La Liga is hopeful of staging December\u2019s fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami, Florida<\/a>, while the Italian top-flight is planning to stage February\u2019s meeting between Milan and Como in Perth, Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2024<\/a>, FIFA approved a working group to look into potential changes to its rules after world football\u2019s governing body was dropped as a defendant by Relevent<\/a>, creating the possibility of European domestic games to be held abroad. FIFA had previously opposed attempts from La Liga to stage games abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, Relevent Sports settled a six-year-long lawsuit<\/a> with the U.S. Soccer Federation, clearing the way for European regular-season games to be held in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, supporters\u2019 groups have now written a joint letter to FIFA, world football\u2019s governing body, urging it not to sanction such matches being moved abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRelocating domestic league matches abroad would set a dangerous precedent, stripping clubs of their roots and undermining the trust of supporters,\u201d said Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFIFA must take a clear stand to protect the integrity and identity of domestic football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose behind the proposals claim they are only interested in a one-off event, a claim we reject. If permitted, this would open a Pandora\u2019s box of disarray for football. Short-sighted commercial interests cannot take precedent over protecting domestic football and the communities our clubs grew out of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The groups \u2014 Football Supporters Europe (FSE), the Independent Supporters Council (ISC), Football Supporters Association Australia (FSA Australia), and FASFE, Accionistas y Socios del Futbol Espanol \u2014 say that such a move would \u201cundermine sporting integrity\u201d as it would disrupt the home-and-away balance in leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also say the plans place \u201ccommercial interests above sporting values\u201d, will \u201calienate local supporters\u201d, \u201cerode the cultural identity\u201d of clubs, generate \u201cenvironmental burdens through long-haul travel\u201d and \u201ccontradict Articles 3 and 6 of FIFA\u2019s own regulations governing international matches\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, European commissioner for sport Glen Micallef said he was \u201cdeeply disappointed\u201d by the proposals from Serie A and La Liga, calling the move a \u201cbetrayal\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serie A said exporting matches would \u201cpromote Italian football on a global scale\u201d and highlighted the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Football League (NFL) playing regular-season matches overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Liga president Javier Tebas, meanwhile, said: \u201cThere are thousands of fans around the world \u2014 many of them European residents \u2014 who also deserve the chance to see their teams live at least once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
