But the African leader was educated in Liberia, where English is the official language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he hosted five African leaders at the White House, Trump asked Boakai: \u201cSuch good English, it\u2019s beautiful. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boakai informed Trump of his place of education, prompting Trump to express his curiosity. \u201cThat\u2019s very interesting,\u201d he said, \u201cI have people at this table who can\u2019t speak nearly as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberia was founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society whose goal was to resettle freed slaves in Africa. The country declared independence from the American Colonization Society in 1847, and a variety of languages are spoken in the country today, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2003\/WORLD\/africa\/07\/04\/btsc.koinange\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">English being the official<\/a>&nbsp;language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several Liberians voiced their offense over Trump\u2019s comment to Boakai, given the US president\u2019s past remarks on African countries and the colonial legacy left by the US organization in Liberia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt insulted because our country is an English-speaking country,\u201d Archie Tamel Harris, a Liberian youth advocate, told the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor him to ask that question, I don\u2019t see it as a compliment. I feel that the US president and people in the west still see Africans as people in villages who are not educated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Liberian diplomat who asked not to be named told the media that they felt the comment \u201cwas not appropriate.\u201d The diplomat added that \u201cit was a bit condescending to an African president who\u2019s from an English-speaking nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veronica Mente, a South African politician,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/veronica_mente\/status\/1943022691109200325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questioned&nbsp;<\/a>on X: \u201cwhat stops [Boakai] from standing up and leav[ing]?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House Press Office defended Trump\u2019s statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was in the meeting and everyone was deeply appreciative of the President\u2019s time and effort. The continent of Africa has never had such a friend in the White House as they do in President Trump,\u201d Massad Boulos, the Trump administration\u2019s senior advisor for Africa, said in a statement .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said that Trump\u2019s comment was a \u201cheartfelt compliment\u201d and that \u201creporters should recognize that President Trump has already done more to restore global stability and uplift countries in Africa and around the world than Joe Biden did in four years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liberia\u2019s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti told the media that \u201cthere was no offense\u201d from the Liberian president\u2019s perspective and that \u201cmany people do not understand the linguistic borders or linguistic demography of the African continent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat President Trump heard distinctly was the American influence on our English in Liberia, and the Liberian president is not offended by that,\u201d Nyanti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that English has different accents and forms, and so him picking up the distinct intonation that has its roots in American English for us was just recognizing a familiar English version,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has previously applauded the English language abilities of other leaders during diplomatic meetings. During a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump complimented his \u201cgood English\u201d and asked if it was as good as his German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merz laughed and noted that he tries to \u201cunderstand almost everything\u201d and said he makes an effort \u201cto speak as good as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US president has centered the English language as part of this \u201cAmerica First\u201d platform. During a 2015 presidential debate, Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eNjcAgNu1Ac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asserted<\/a>&nbsp;that the US is \u201ca country where we speak English.\u201d In March, he signed an executive order making English the official language of the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has previously landed in hot water for things he has said about the African nations. In 2018, the president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/12\/politics\/donald-trump-tweet-daca-rejection\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referred to migrants<\/a>&nbsp;from African countries and other nations as coming from \u201cshithole countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, he lectured South African President Cyril Ramaphosa&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/21\/politics\/trump-ramaphosa-south-africa-meeting-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on false claims<\/a>&nbsp;that White South African farmers are the victims of a genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump struck a different tone on Wednesday as he met with the leaders of Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal, praising their countries as \u201call very vibrant places with very valuable land, great minerals, great oil deposits, and wonderful people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In turn, he was met with approval from the African leaders, who heaped praise on the president as they urged him to invest in their countries and develop their plentiful natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boakai even remarked that Liberia \u201c(believes) in the policy of making America great again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Editor:msserwanga@gmail.com<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump praised Liberian President Joseph Boakai for his strong grasp of the English language on Wednesday.
