Uganda\u2019s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday held a diplomatic strategic meeting with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Uganda, Matthias Schauer, at State Lodge Nakasero, following tensions between Kampala and Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The closed-door meeting came on the heels of public accusation of the German envoy that he was supporting subversive activities in Uganda. Earlier in the day, a group of supporters aligned to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) staged a protest outside the German Embassy in Kampala, accusing Ambassador Schauer of meddling in Uganda\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though official details of the discussion remain undisclosed, diplomatic sources suggest that the talks likely addressed the strain in bilateral relations, including the recent suspension of military cooperation by the Uganda People\u2019s Defence Forces (UPDF). The decision to cut ties with Germany\u2019s military mission followed accusations of political interference .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ambassador Schauer has been at the centre of growing criticism from sections of Uganda\u2019s political establishment, with government insiders alleging that some of his recent engagements crossed diplomatic boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Observers note that Friday\u2019s meeting indicates a possible attempt by both parties to defuse tensions and explore avenues for restoring cooperation, especially in key areas such as development assistance, trade, and regional security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As of press time, neither State House nor the German Embassy had issued an official statement regarding the outcomes of the engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
