Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home in New Mexico, the Santa Fe County Sheriff\u2019s Office told CNN. He was 95.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their causes of death have not been confirmed, but foul play is not suspected, Santa Fe County Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesperson Denise Womack-Avila told the media Thursday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputies responded to a welfare check request at the home around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday and found Hackman, Arakawa and a dog deceased, Womack-Avila said. An investigation is ongoing, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical examiner\u2019s reports with the final cause of death \u201cgenerally take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to generate,\u201d said Chris Ramirez, spokesperson for the New Mexico medical investigator\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hackman\u2019s performances in such films as \u201cThe French Connection,\u201d \u201cHoosiers,\u201d \u201cUnforgiven,\u201d and \u201cThe Firm\u201d elevated character roles to leading-man levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hackman\u2019s best roles were often of conflicted authority figures or surprisingly clever white-collar villains, such as the iconic, evil Lex Luthor in the \u201cSuperman\u201d film series in the 1970s and \u201980s. Many held a hint \u2013 sometimes more than a hint \u2013 of menace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He won an Oscar for his portrayal in 1971\u2019s \u201cThe French Connection\u201d of New York cop Popeye Doyle, a detective who gets his man but at a high cost. His surveillance expert in 1974\u2019s \u201cThe Conversation\u201d is single-minded to the point of obsession, losing all perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He won his second Oscar for his performance as Little Bill Daggett, the violent sheriff in Clint Eastwood\u2019s 1992 film, \u201cUnforgiven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellow celebrities and fans have begun sharing tributes on social media for the late Hollywood legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola, who worked with Hackman in \u201cThe Conversation,\u201d posted: \u201cThe loss of a great artist, always cause for both mourning and celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity. I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution,\u201d Coppola wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actor and writer George Takei called Hackman \u201cone of the true giants of the screen,\u201d in a social media post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGene Hackman could play anyone, and you could feel a whole life behind it. He could be everyone and no one, a towering presence or an everyday Joe,\u201d Takei wrote. \u201cHe will be missed, but his work will live on forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hackman was 36 before he broke through in 1967\u2019s \u201cBonnie and Clyde,\u201d a role he got after losing the part of Mr. Robinson in \u201cThe Graduate.\u201d Before that, he\u2019d served in the Marines, struggled to make a living in California and New York \u2013 sometimes with a roommate, \u201cGraduate\u201d star Dustin Hoffman \u2013 and worked odd jobs, including truck driver and doorman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He retired at 74 and lived in Santa Fe in recent decades with Arakawa, a former classical pianist, largely staying out of the public eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hackman had three children, whom he shared with his late ex-wife, Faye Maltese, who died in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
