Uganda\u2019s former Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Cossy Odomel, is dead, according to his family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odomel, 69, died in India, where he was being treated for an undisclosed illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe family of Mr John Cossy Odomel deeply mourns the passing of Mr John Cossy Odomel (IGP Emeritus), a distinguished former Inspector General of Police and a beloved father. He peacefully passed away on the morning of Tuesday, 18th February 2025, in India,\u201d a brief statement released by the family reads in part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis invaluable contributions to the Uganda Police Force will forever be remembered. Details of the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. Relatives, friends, and in-laws are hereby informed. May his soul rest in eternal peace!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IGP, Mr Abbas Byakagaba said on his official X handle, thus “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Cossy Odomel, former Inspector General\u00a0Police<\/a>, ( 1992-1998) a distinguished member of Uganda Police Force who dedicated many years of service and leadership to our organization. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Odomel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in April 1955 in Kameke Village, Pallisa District, Odomel excelled academically, earning a place at Lango College for secondary education before joining Makerere University, where he pursued a bachelor\u2019s degree in chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odomel served as IGP from 1992 to 1998. After retiring from the police force, Odomel ventured into politics. In 2001, he contested the Pallisa County parliamentary seat, receiving support from Movement heavyweights.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he was unsuccessful in his bid. In September 2006, Odomel lost a petition challenging the election of Pallisa MP Louis Opange. The court dismissed his petition, stating that he failed to prove any of the grounds for the petition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Odomel was awarded the Exemplary Service Medal Class One in 2010 in recognition of his service to the country while in police service . He was married to Mary Magdalene Aino Odomel, who passed away in October 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is survived by his children .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
