President Yoweri Museveni has finally appointed new Bank of Uganda Governor ,Dr. Michael\u00a0Atingi-Ego. He will be deputised by Augustus Nuwagaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atingi -Ego, who is 60 years old has ben serving as the Deputy Governor.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been the acting head of the bank since the death of long-serving former governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuwagaba has been an economics lecturer at Uganda’s largest public university, Makerere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both men taken on the leadership role at the central bank with eyes set on \u00a0ensuring economic stability, inflation control, and financial sector regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Atingi-Ego \u00a0is a\u00a0Ugandan<\/a>\u00a0economist, who was appointed Governor of the\u00a0Bank of Uganda<\/a>, on 10 February 2025. At the time of his appointment, he served as the Deputy Governor Bank of Uganda and previously executive director of the\u00a0Macroeconomics and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa<\/em>\u00a0(MEFMI), based in\u00a0Harare<\/a>,\u00a0Zimbabwe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atingi-Ego was born in Uganda. He attended local primary and secondary schools. He holds a\u00a0bachelor’s degree<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Economics<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Makerere University<\/a>, Uganda’s oldest and largest public university. His degree of\u00a0Master of Arts<\/a>\u00a0in Economics was awarded by the\u00a0Cardiff Business School<\/a>, in the United Kingdom (UK). His\u00a0Doctor of Philosophy<\/a>\u00a0degree, also in Economics, was obtained from the\u00a0University of Liverpool<\/a>, also in the UK<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He started out at the Bank of Uganda. He rose through the ranks to become the executive director, of Research. In 2008 he took up an assignment with the\u00a0International Monetary Fund<\/a>\u00a0(IMF) as deputy director of the African Department (AFR), based in\u00a0Washington, DC<\/a>. In September 2018, he was appointed as executive director at MEFMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After vetting by the\u00a0Ugandan parliament<\/a>, he replaced\u00a0Louis Kasekende<\/a>, whose 10-year term at the central bank ended in January 2020. Dr Atingi-Ego assumed office as Deputy Governor of Bank of Uganda, on 3 August 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atingi-Ego is credited with bringing a wealth of regional and international experience to his new office as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda. While at the IMF, he contributed to IMF work on increasing effectiveness of capacity development and in modernising monetary policy frameworks in\u00a0developing countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2022, Atingi-Ego was recognized by\u00a0African Banker Magazine<\/em>\u00a0as the “Central Bank Governor Of The Year”, in recognition of his efforts to tame inflation and maintain foreign exchange stability in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
