South Korean MPs have begun impeachment proceedings against\u00a0President Yoon Suk Yeol<\/a>\u00a0after thwarting his shock move to impose martial law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president had said martial law was needed to protect the country from “North Korea’s communist forces” and to “eliminate anti-state elements.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though he cited North Korea, President Yoon’s decision was seen as a response to\u00a0domestic pressure and a series of scandals<\/a>. Less than two hours after his declaration, MPs forced their way into the National Assembly and\u00a0voted to block his decision<\/a>\u00a0– some broke through barricades;\u00a0the parliament’s speaker told the media he climbed over a wall.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the assembly vote, President Yoon announced he was\u00a0reversing his martial law decision<\/a>\u00a0– MPs will now vote on his impeachment in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yoon’s defence minister Kim Yong-hyun – said to be influential in the president’s martial law plan –\u00a0offered his resignation on Wednesday<\/a> and a woman who stood before a soldier and grabbed his gun in parliament last night\u00a0has told the the media why she did it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
