The Israeli military has confirmed that the head of\u00a0Hamas<\/a>‘ military wing, Mohammed Deif, was killed in an airstrike in\u00a0Gaza<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Israeli military has confirmed that the head of Hamas<\/a>‘ military wing, Mohammed Deif, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel<\/a> targeted Deif in a July 13 strike that hit a compound on the outskirts of the southern Gaza<\/a> city of Khan Younis, but there had been no immediate confirmation Deif was killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 90 other people<\/a>, including displaced civilians in nearby tents, were killed in the strike, Gaza<\/a> health officials said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement Thursday, the Israeli military said: “Following an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that\u00a0Mohammed Deif was eliminated<\/a>\u00a0in the strike.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deif was one of the founders of\u00a0Hamas<\/a>‘ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, in the 1990s, going on to lead it for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under his command, the wing carried out dozens of suicide bombings against Israelis on buses and at cafes and built up a formidable arsenal of rockets that could strike deep into Israel<\/a> and often did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no immediate comment from Hamas<\/a> but the Israeli confirmation came a day after an apparent Israeli airstrike in Tehran, Iran<\/a> killed the militant group’s top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel<\/a> has not confirmed or denied being behind the attack, but Iran<\/a> has vowed retaliation. Along with Deif and Haniyeh, Israel<\/a> has vowed to eliminate Hamas<\/a>\u2019 top leader in Gaza<\/a>, Yehya Sinwar, but he has so far remained elusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel<\/a>\u00a0says Sinwar and Deif were the masterminds of the October 7 attack in which\u00a0Hamas<\/a>-led militants rampaged in southern Israeli communities, killing around 1,200 people and taking some 250 others hostage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
