The New Kiira Motors fully electric buses have laid a solid foundation for a clean energy revolution in Uganda and the East African region, the Minister of Information Communication Technology \u00a0(ICT) and\u00a0 National Guidance, Ms. Judith Nabakooba, has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c The new Kayoola Electric buses built locally with the Kiira Motors green mobility technologies should set the stage for a clean energy revolution in Uganda, East African region and the African continent while enhancing value addition, job and wealth creation,\u201d Nabakooba stated while addressing\u00a0 Government Communications Officers drawn from government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies,(MDA) at the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation in Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flanked by the Minister of Science Technology and Innovation, Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, Nabakooba noted that by producing clean energy-efficient vehicles, Uganda has demonstrated that it has the capabilities to champion green mobility-mass transportation solutions for cities and urban centers. \u201cThese innovations create many opportunities across the automotive industry value chain which Ugandans should tap into.\u00a0 We should harness and add value to the abundant raw materials and minerals available in the country – to manufacture the various parts needed to produce cars in Uganda. This will ultimately lead to job creation and increase incomes for Ugandans especially the youth,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While underscoring the importance of a vibrant\nautomotive industry for the country\u2019s industrialization\nagenda , Nabakooba called upon the government communications\nofficials to embrace it and inform the general public about the many\n available opportunities for national economic growth and\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She hailed President Yoweri Museveni for his\nvision to promote science and technology- noting that the\ncommercialization of many Ugandan innovations such as the\n Kayoola electric buses was the right path to industrialisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Elioda Tumwebaze said that with\nthe car market expected to hit 500,000 units (half a million vehicles\n) bought every year in the East African Region alone by 2027,\nthe automotive industry will be one of Uganda\u2019s and the\nregion \u2018s major economic drivers for many years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c Coupled with a rapid growing population not\nonly in Uganda but the African continent and availability of vast\nnatural resources like iron ore Ugandans should prepare themselves to\nsupply car parts and other services. The benefits are huge and\ngovernment will continue to promote local content participation\nacross the value chain,\u201d he emphasized .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, Nabakooba flagged off the government\ncommunication officers\u2019 Kayoola Electric bus maiden trip to the\nKiira Vehicles Plant site in Jinja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Kayoola EVS\u2019 drive to Jinja \nmarked a major milestone for Uganda’s second market validation\nelectric bus as Kiira Motors readies to produce\ncommercial cars for the first time in its history .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Kayola electric bus was built using green mobility technologies developed by engineers Kiira Motors with support from their technology\u00a0partners Chinese \u2018s leading Original Equipment Manufacturer,(OEP),\u00a0CHTC Motor. Co. Ltd, KMC\u2019s Executive Chairman, Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa,said while addressing the government communicators at the Kiira Vehicles Plant site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to , Eng. Richard Madanda , the Kayoola\nelectric buses can cover a distance of 300 kilometers under a single\ncharge. The bus has a speed governor that allows a maximum\nspeed of 80 kilometers per hour but can pick up to a speed of 140\nKilometers per hour .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madanda said that a team of 20 personnel , 10 from\nKiira Motors and 10 from the Uganda People\u2019s Defence Forces ,\n(UPDF) Luwero Industries Ltd , built the second bus in under two\nmonths .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kiira Motors CEO,Mr. Paul Isaac Musasizi,said the\ncompany now has proven capacity to build and produce eight buses a\nmonth at their temporary base at Luwero Industries in Nakasongola.\nKMC is expected to produce an initial 5,000 vehicles per year when\nthe Kiira Vehicles Plant at the Jinja Industrial and Business Park is\ncommissioned in June 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Allan Muhumuza, the Business Development\nManager , said more buses will be built by the company this year\nand these will include clean diesel combustion engine buses along\nside the electric ones and the company is now ready to take orders\nfrom both government and the private sector .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Under Secretary at the Ministry of Science\ntechnology and Innovation Mr. Freddie Mugunga urged the government\u2019s\nspokespersons to promote government \u2018s policy of Buy Uganda Build\nUganda (BUBU) to grow the local industries .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Stellar Kayoola Electric Bus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Kayoola EVS buses have a capacity of 90\npassengers (49 sitting and 41 standing) while the diesel engine ones\nwill seat 65 passengers . The buses will be built locally by KMC\nengineers using technologies developed by the company and in\npartnership with the UPDF\u2019s Luwero Industries Limited led by Brig.\nGen Octavius Butuuro. Luwero Industries is a\nsubsidiary of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) the business\narm of the army headed by the amiable Gen.
