{"id":1135,"date":"2020-04-12T10:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-12T10:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ugandaupdatenews.com\/?p=1135"},"modified":"2020-05-12T13:25:24","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T13:25:24","slug":"parliament-creates-15-new-cities-in-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prowebinhost.com\/anzu\/parliament-creates-15-new-cities-in-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"PARLIAMENT  CREATES 15  NEW CITIES IN UGANDA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At least\u00a0 313 members of parliament have passed a resolution to create 15 new cities across Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Out of the 15 approved cities, seven will start operating this year 2020 and these include Mbarara, Jinja, Fort Portal, Arua, Gulu Mbale, and Masaka. In the second phase of implementation from July 2021, three more cities will be brought on board and these are Hoima, Lira, and Soroti. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third phase will have Entebbe\u00a0 in July 2022 and Wakiso, Nakasongola , Moroto and Kabale are set to become cities in \u00a0July 2023. There is marked excitement about the creation of new cities because of the anticipated benefits that come along with living in a city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t<strong>Politics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tThe\n\tnew cities will have two divisions each apart from Kampala which\n\twill have three divisions down from the current five. This means\n\tthat each division will have one MP plus one seat for a woman member\n\tof parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\t<strong>USMID\n\tINPUT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tMany\n\tof the approved cities have also benefited from &nbsp;the Uganda\n\tSupport to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Program\n\t&nbsp;which has been running since &nbsp;2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tDevelopment\n\texperts have called for a change in the mind-set of the leaders\n\tunderstand that running a city is a lot more costly and rigorous\n\tthan running a Municipality; city life is fast and cities are open\n\tto all including investors, the youths many of whom are in search of\n\tjobs .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\tUnder\n\tthe USMID program, the 5 municipalities of Arua, Fort Portal, Gulu,\n\tJinja and Fort Portal which have been elevated to city status have\n\treceived about 187 billion Uganda shillings combined between &nbsp;2014\n\t\u2013 2018 for both infrastructure development and institutional\n\tcapacity strengthening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nAs\na result there are obvious visible improvements in infrastructure\nespecially rehabilitated roads, street lighting and urban greening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least\u00a0 313 members of parliament have passed a resolution to create 15 new cities across Uganda.
