Time is running out\nfor people who encroached and settled in wetlands, lake\nshoreline and river banks following a directive from President\nYoweri Museveni that they should vacate the hitherto protected\nareas immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a two page letter addressed to the \nMinister of Water and Environment, Mr. Sam Cheptoris, President\nMuseveni said that it was unacceptable for encroachers to stay\nin protected wetlands which has led to flooding due to\nthe rising water levels on many water bodies across the country\n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c I am therefore, directing you to remove\n all the people on the wetlands, shore-line, river-banks\nand government forests,\u201d Museveni says in the letter\nwhich is copied to the Vice President, the Prime Minister and\nMinister of Energy and mineral development .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that government will only exempt the\n people who are settled in Busoga- Bukedi- and\nKigyezi because they were \u201c misled by the earlier governments .\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c You should not only remove the\nencroachers but should working with local government ensure\nthat Muruka and Gombolala Chiefs who never took action\nagainst the encroachers should be dismissed ,\u201d he\ndirected .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The President was alarmed by the fact that\ngardens were found on the floating island that hit the Owen\nFall Dam last month and caused nationwide power shutdown . Many\nVillas for the rich that were built along the lake Victoria shoreline\n have flooded in recent days as the lake water levels continue\nto swell .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
