President Museveni has appointed two lady Justices Catherine Bamugemereire and Monica Mugenyi to the Supreme Court, the highest appellate body in Uganda. The appointments have been confirmed by Ms Maria Teresa Nabulya, the spokesperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms Nabulya said the two justices, who have previously served at the Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court will be vetted the Parliamentary Appointments Committee, chaired by Speaker Anita Among.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supreme Court Judge Faith Mwondha, is set to retire at the age of 70 in March 2024. The new appointments will bring the number of justices of the Supreme Court to 11. The Supreme Court is led by the Chief Justice Owinyi Dollo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year Parliament passed the Judicature (Amendment) Bill after MPs rejected a proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court justices from 11 to 21. The Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs argued that such an increase would not effectively address case backlog issues and could escalate government expenditure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About Justice Bamugemereire?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, is a career judicial officer who started her legal service as a State Attorney in 1993 .
